music video - Foreplay. Task 8 pt 5

Foreplay - Jalen Santoy

Longshot of two people, stood in an open field. There is a considerably large distance between them and they are facing in opposite directions. There is a pink faded into blue gradient layered over them. All of these opposites between them contradict. The distance between them shows there problems as a couple and how different they are.. They are both facing different ends of the field, this connotes that they want different  things within their lifes; with different goals and futures.
The colour differnce layered over them creates a mood that blends vunrability and strength.

Low shots are shown whilst he begins rapping along, stood alone in the filed. This ties in with theorist Dyer and his idea of stardom. We are seeing this process through the clothes he wears and the way he presents himself as an up and comming artist. The label are creating an image for the artist.

The lyrics start 'First he tell you that he love's you'
There is an imediate climate change, switching from open wide fields to this seductive shot.
I LOVE THIS SHOT. It exactly shows how I want to film my video. I want colour and brightness, no real natural light but something so much more.

The camera follows her walking into the club, its the same girl from the open field. It then cuts to fast pased shots of girls flipping their hair and dancing, this sets the scene.

The music video begins flipping between shots of the girl alone in the club and small takes of people dancing, showing lust and romance. This is then contridicted by shown back to back with shots of Jalen Santoy ( the guy at the begining) by himself and with a friend. This shows that he is batterling with himself whether he wants to be with her, or by himself. This continues untill the end where the music stops and she begins speaking over, she is shouting at him, abusing him. He begins responding and there is a slight argument. she calling him not a real man.
This continues untill his car stops and he slowly falls out of it. There are yellow flower petals covered over the concrete floor. The colour yellow during the middle ages was used as a symbol of mourning the dead. Jalen's brother died in a car shotting by a police office. Jalen falling to the ground into the yellow petals demonstrates not only the mourning of his brother, but making a statemnet about the discrimation of black people in America and the problems curently happening with the police.

Task 10- Research into record company

The track I have decided to use is SALES - Chinese New Year

After a while of considering.... I have decided to not use this song...
It just didnt feel right for me and I would have regretted my descion later on. I have also chosen to chnage the idea for my music video.

Initial Ideas expanded

Over the summer I started planning out more about what I want to to with my music video. The song I have offocially decided on for my music video is 'Chinese New Year' by SALES. I really fell inlove with the song and my gut feeling for a music video I beleived I should take forward.

Break Free is a video Ruby Rose stared in, that went viral around the internet. Im using this as my basis inspiration.

I want to show the story about my friend Claire Wilson.

I wrote down all the lyrics and annotated them to pace of the music and shot length's I could use. I also started thinking about shot types I can use and the storyline I can begin to build.
Underneathe I wrote the basic story line of the narrative.

music video - loyalty task 8 pt 4

kendrick Lamar - Loyalty. Ft. Rihanna
Straight away the video begins in a deep red lighting, this connotes ideas of lust and sex. Many girls are dressed in leather lingerie and chains, suggesting an idea of a BDSM kink. The girls are dancing around Kendrick Lamar who is sat in a throne type chair completely oblivious to their exsistance, this connotes his higher power. The camera is places on the floor in an almost mid low angel shot looking up to Kendrick, This again shows his royal type personality. The camera zooms in more and more untill level with kendricks eyes, then snaps out as a girl, dressed different to the rest starts singing in his ear, pulls out a knife and goes to stab him in the head ( showing no loyalty ).
There is a straight cut to the same angel of kendrick on the floor in an urban underground type room, he is being approached by a gang of boys. As they try and get closer they get sunken into the ground, as it was sand not concrete. This suggest that if you break someones loyalty, you go down. The lighting in this urban area is dark with a grey and black colour pallette. Some of the gang memebrs are wearing red balaclavas. This connotes danger.
There is another straight cut to Rihanna, she comes down into a car window. The lighting has an almost creme overall glance that tones in with her clothes and makes he face glow.
The lyrcis " Bad ghal Rhi Rhi now" Straight away, we know shes bad news. Rihanna has a repuation for being the 'bag girl'. This ties in which theorist Dyer, He talks about stardom. The idea that this person is not a real person, but the star that the record label have created. Rhianna has created this image for herself lately, and in all music video appreances shes been making, she has been upholding this character. Wearing only fashion statement pieces and always looking extra.
We see the driver get out of the car, as this happens Kendrick storms towards him and starts a fight, Whilst 'Rhi' stands in the background smirking and smiling.

The vidoe stakes a completely spin as the music stops and changes to a very similar tone to his other song on the albumn called 'XXX.FEAT.U2' this could just be some publising for other songs on the alubm. It gives the vidoe a chnace to slow down as we seem Kendrick and Rihanna connect and bond.  Lyrics no stating "death of me and you and me and you" We see clips of them sinking into the ground whislt holding each other and the knife that appeared earlier in the video.

Video cuts again to what looks like New York with all of the high rise buildings shown in a wide establishing shot. The music at this point has completely stopped and we see Rihanna holding Kendricks hand. He says "trust me?" She responds with a smile. The music kicks off where it left going into the chorus as he drops Rihanna off the building holding her with one hand. Showing the loyalty between them.

A new scene of Kendrick in an intimidation room, being intimidated by another version of Kendrick, Hes questioning about who his true loyalty is too. The two Kendricks are wearing opposite suits showing they are the bad and good within each other. A girl comes up behind the tied up Kendrick and suffocates him in a bag. The location of this is set inside of a creepy Kitchen preparing type room. Stereotypically 'mafia' type people are stood around smoking cigars and looking intimidating.

Kendrick and Rihanna are in a spinning blue expensive car. They are in the car singing and messing around, without a care in the world. Suddenly, another vehicale crashes into their car and you see the glass smash and them thrown around. Amazingly they are untouched and undamaged. This connotes their overall superior characters, they can always leave untouched. They sit laughing about the situation. Finally we see them on a birds eye view looking down on them on the roof where Kendrick hung Rihanna off. They are lying down on the thin strip smiling and laughing.

What inspire me about the video
Something I love about this video is their superiority. Their idea of stardom beats everything and everyone and everything is blow them. The idea of death and danger is not even questionable to them, they are invinceable. I also like their use of the red lighting at the begining, I really want my video to be really colourfull and bright.

music video, Come A Little Closer task 8 pt 3

anylsis of music video : Come A Little Closer - Cage The Elephant

The entirety of the music vidoe is filmed on a green screen. The green screen throughout shows a psychedelic world, in which the band members travel through and encounter bizzare creatures and monsters. The band memebers begin by wearing normal modern clothes resemberling their natural self, when they begin peforming the song in this world their costumes change. We see them then wearing 70's inspire suits. The 70's were known for their use of acid, this resembles the music vidoe as it connotes one large acid trip. Their costumes chnaging hints that they have been devoured by this acid world and joined it.
During the peformances they sing lyrics of
"Come a little closer than you see         come on come on
Things arent always what they seem to be    come on come on
Do you understand the things that you've been seeing      come on come on
Do you understand the things that you've been dreaming"

The lyrics demonstrate how everything you see may not really be what you seen, Suggesting having a trip takes you into the real psychedelic world, you cant see to the natural eye.
It could also suggest mental illness and how brains are wired in different ways... whos to say whats normal?

Whilst peforming, the band stand in a sterotypical formation, This relates to the stereotypical conventions of a band. This is then contradicted when images of them are repeated on screen, so there are three of them. Or they have vibrations of colour sprouting off all corners of them. Or the colour of their skin is multicoloured. It just shows the bizzareness of the video and again all adds to the trip.

Lighting
High key lighting used in the studio whilst filming the band on the green screen. They are very brightly lit so they can stand out amoungst all of the chaos that is continuing around them. The lighting is shining on them in which direction they are looking at. For example, when Matt Shultz (lead singer of the band) is riding on a fire beast around space, he is facing the sideways, you can see the lighting shining on him the way he's facing, rarther on his side profile. This just helps audiences to see the band members.

Editing
The pace of the editing is done with the beat of the music. I love this affect because it helps the video the really flow with the music and create more of an effect overall. When the pace of the song is music quite fast, especcially during the chorus, it has really fast pace editing and gets extra trippy by roating clips and sliding them around. During slow pace sections ( bridge and verses ) the pace of the editing is much more slow with longer clips and more of a narrative.

Camera
The camera stayed still majority of the time, and just allowed movement to be going on within the green screen and the actors moving. It created a visual affect of the band memebers running through the world.
Close up were used when filming the peformance of the band to show them singing etc.

What inspires me from this music video
I like craziness of this video and the underlining tone to it. I want my video to be colourfull, bright and eyecatching; like this music  video.

music video tsk 5 pt 6

Genre: Electronic Dance
Costume: Bold, bright, loud and eccentric costumes. They express personality and they completely compliment the fast paced of the track. There costumes are so out of the ordinary you cant help but to look at them and not look at anything else. The costumes express their confidence and the genre of the crazy electro dance music.
Camera shots: Close up( Show the artists singing and portrays in detail the beauty of the disturbance), Long shots( establishing shots then tracks in to the close ups), mid shots (Fits in all the dancers)
Camera movement: Tracking's used a lot to follow the artist around, as she is the main focus. Within this there were lots of pans and tilts. The camera never stopped moving. As the song was extremely fast paced and electronic the camera had to keep up with this by moving around throughout the dancers. Grimes would come towards the camera and push it back almost.
Editing: Highly fast paced editing. This is used to keep up with the music. The editing was also cut to the beat. This worked extremely effectively as it would cut between the on beat dancing to other sections and back again. The pleasing cuts on the beat compliments it all very well. After effects are used a lot within this music video. They have special effects on the car section to give a futuristic feel to it. Along with this they have editing in a city like backdrop and bright flashing strobe lights. They also used an after effect if drawing onto the image which moved with the motion. This creates a unrealistic effect which gives a comedic effect to the music video. This after effect is often used within the 'K-pop' genre.
Lighting: High key lighting used to enhance the artist, making it clear without washing her out. During the 'mosh' type scenes of everyone in the blood, there is low key lighting here. This creates a nice contrast as it becomes more and more disturbing.
Narrative: There is no clear narrative. Through the use of location and the futuristic car they are riding in, it gives a idea of a journey they are on. However, the video follows no story. But there are a lot of dance aspects used throughout.

Conventions of a stereotypical music video

Camera shots : Long shots(sets location) , Close ups (Show artist singing and portrays emotion), Mid shots.
Camera movement: Tracking is used a lot to follow the artists around. also used, Pan, Tilt, Crane shots
Mise en scene: This differs depending on the importance of the representation they are trying to create. You have to relate this to the genre and narrative/ song lyrics. An example of this is if the song represents a slow pace, isolation and loneliness. Then you could place the artist inside of a wide open space with  nothing inside it.
Editing: Jump cuts are often used of a predominant technique within music videos. Also are dissolved and fades.
Lighting: lighting is very important. Even within a 'dark' scene you still need to have the correct lighting which represents this but also allows you to see the artist with ease. Lighting is used with studio lights, Hand held and flood lights. This allows lots of light to be flooded in without washing out the artist. This is used to create an enhanced look.
Sound: Sound used within a music video is typically just the vocals and the track. however, this can differ if the music video contained a narrative. It may stop and you can hear dialogue.
Costume: Costume is vital to represent who the artist is. Clothes are a very easy way of stating straight away a situation. This will change depending from genre to genre.
  • Pop music: Pop culture always stays on trend with the latest fashion. Artist can do this or change it up and set a new trend which then leads on to their audience following this trend.
  • Rock Music: Dark colours are typically used here. Blacks and greys. Leather jackets and jeans are used a lot.
  • Electro Dance: Bright exciting never seen before outfits these artists wear. Something which is relatable to the audience, but still out of grasps. Its bold and eccentric.
Colour: Colour works well to represent a mood/ atmosphere. An upbeat song may use bold bright colours, Where as a rock song may use dark toned colours. Something more mysterious may use black and white.
